Joan Jett was a female punk rock musician who started off in the 1970s with the Runaways, who were the first ever all women hard rock group. During the 1980s she set off on her own solo career with the Blackhearts and had some big hit songs such as I Love Rock and Roll and Bad Reputation. Joan Jett would be very influential for women in rock and roll later on during the 1990s and 2000s. She is my favorite female rock and roll musician.
Bad Reputation is a song about Joan Jett’s bad reputation for being a controversial woman in rock and roll who was not afraid to get down and dirty and hold her own against guy groups of the time such as Kiss, AC/DC and Motley Crue. She was rejected by twenty three different record labels before she was finally able to make her first album with the Blackhearts. This song was meant to get back at the record companies who had rejected her now that she was actually doing well in music. However, it is one of the best songs to also represent teenage rebellion.
