The Jewish people will be rewarded for obedience to God. Some idols needed to be destroyed. Having no other Gods before God was one of the first commandments, but the Jewish people broke this one pretty frequently, which led to punishment from God. The Jews were warned against idolatry and pagan practices that they might pick up from people who lived near them. One of the reasons God did not want the Jews to mix with people who lived near them was because he knew that the other people would convert the Jews’ ideas to whatever theirs were away from God. This is one reason why God tells us to live in the world but not of it.
