The ark was returned to the Israelites when the Philistines realized that they had been cursed by taking the ark away. The Israelites returned to following God and the sons of Samuel were put in charge of them, but they did not follow God, so Israel wanted a king to be put over them and ended up rejecting God as their king again. Samuel reluctantly agreed with God to look for a king who turned out to be Saul when he was looking for his missing livestock. Saul asked Samuel about his live stock and was annointed as king instead. During his coronation ceremony he hid among the baggage but was eventually found and made the king despite his apparent shyness.
