When David found out that Saul had been killed in battle he became the king of Judah, but one of Saul’s sons named Ishbaal became king of the rest of Israel for two years. There was a man named Abner who pretended to be defecting to David but was actually a spy for Ishbaal, so he was killed by some of David’s men. Some men assassinated Ishbaal in his sleep and gave his head to David, but David had the assassinators killed for killing the son of Saul, a previous king. Some Philistines when they found out David had been made king tried to attack David but David retreated to the main fortress and had them repulsed. When Ishbaal was killed David became king of the rest of Israel.
