David had a census taken of all of the people in Israel. His followers were reluctant to do it because they knew that God would become angry because the census showed a lack of faith in God. However, they did it anyway because David was king and God did indeed become angry with them for doing such a thing. God gave David three choices for his punishment of three years of famine, three months of being defeated by their enemies or three days of disease. David chose the three days of disease because he preferred to be at the mercy of a merciful God to that of other humans.
